Polywog2

New terms seem to be entering into the world of Polyamory (Poly) at an ever increasing speed now a days.  I believe this is influenced by the growing awareness in our media and society for Poly and our different lifestyles.  Some of these new words/terms die off rather quickly or don’t seem to fit the community as a whole. However the other day I came across a neat word that I have decided to keep around.

Polywog.

What in the world could this be, you ask?  Well, a polliwog is another word for tadpole, the cute offspring of frogs; specifically once the tadpole has visible legs.  Thus Polywog is a term for someone new to the polyamorous lifestyle.  Often in Poly communities and groups people new to Poly are often referred to as “Newbies”.  This can often leave an unpleasant after-taste or place a negative connotation onto this person who is brave enough to reach out for support in our community.  Instead I propose to use Polywog for people to use to identify themselves or others.  To me this implies a state of change, or trying new things and possibly becoming a different person, or at least the person they would like to become.  The term also has a soft or ‘cute’ connotation that will help to give a positive label to people newly introduced to the world of Poly.
